Sen. Herb Kohl won't run for re-election in 2012, the Associated Press and the Washington Post reported Friday.
Both AP and the Post reported that Kohl would announce his retirement at a news conference scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday at his Milwaukee office.
The AP cited two Democratic sources with knowledge of Kohl's plans, while the Post in this story quoted "an informed Democratic source."
Kohl's spokeswoman Lynn Becker declined to comment on the announcement, AP reported.
Kohl is the fifth Democratic senator to announce his retirement ahead of the 2012 election.
The 76-year-old Democrat was elected to the Senate in 1988 and re-elected to a fourth six-year term in 2006.
Kohl owns the Milwaukee Bucks and his family also founded Kohl's grocery and department stores.
His current term ends Jan. 3, 2013.
The Post named several potential contenders for Kohl's seat, including Rep. Ron Kind and former Sen. Russ Feingold for Democrats, and Rep. Paul Ryan for Republicans.

Herb Kohl to retire
By Chris Cillizza

Wisconsin Sen. Herb Kohl won’t run for re-election in 2012. Andrew Harrer/BloombergWisconsin Sen. Herb Kohl will announce his retirement today according to an informed Democratic source, a decision that sets up a competitive open seat contest in a state that has already drawn considerable national attention this year.
Kohl, who is in his fourth term, will make it official this morning with a noon announcement in Wisconsin, the source said. His office did not return an email seeking comment.
Kohl is the sixth Democratic-aligned Senator to step aside in advance of the 2012 election. Two Republicans aren’t running for reelection next year.

Democratic strategists insisted that they will field a top-tier candidate in the open seat, noting that the fight between Gov. Scott Walker (R) and national unions over collective bargaining in the state earlier this year has energized the party.
Rep. Ron Kind and well as former Sen. Russ Feingold are sure to be leading candidates for Democrats. Former Rep. Tom Barrett, who ran lost to Walker last November, as well as Reps. Tammy Baldwin and Steve Kagen are also mentioned.
National Republican Senatorial Committee spokesman Brian Walsh said in a statement that Kohl’s retirement “immediately presents another key opportunity for Senate Republicans next year.”
For Republicans, the obvious name is Rep. Paul Ryan, the architect of House Republicans’ controversial budget plan. It’s not clear whether Ryan wants to leave his perch as chairman of the House Budget Commtitee to make a statewide run, however.
Other GOP names being mentioned include state Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen, wealthy businessman Tim Michels and former Rep. Mark Neumann.
