A Great American Novel that is Timeless in Its Understanding of the American Character: It's Brutality, Recklessness, Aspiration, Idealism and Class Divide. "The Great Gatsby," The Most Cherished Novel of the Editor of BuzzFlash, Mark Karlin. Written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. It's setting is the '20s; It's Themes and Narrative are Exquisitely Timeless in Understanding America. Signet Edition.
By F. Scott Fitzgerald

BuzzFlash.com's Review (excerpt)
Why as the BuzzFlash Progressive Marketplace goes offline for awhile as part of our transition process to joining the great Truthout family is Mark Karlin, the Editor of BuzzFlash, choosing to offer a book written more than 75 years ago, "The Great Gatsby"?

Because it is perhaps for me that elusive piece of writing known as "The Great American Novel." F. Scott Fitzgerald knew the wealthy; he knew the aspirations of Americans from the other side of the tracks; he knew the brutality of privilege; and he knew how to write a novel that didn't waste a word.

Fitzgerald exquisitely combines character, plot and metaphor into a book that gives more insight into America in 2010 than any recent novel we have written, even though, he was writing in the Jazz Age after World War I.

This novel is so mesmerizing and rich and real, and yet gets to the heart of a nation who like the protagonist of "The Great Gatsby" is constantly seeking a fulfillment that cannot be satiated: "Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgiastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that's no matter--tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther.... And one fine morning--"

But the morning of fulfillment does not arrive. No woman or man whose "voice is full of money" can make us feel complete. Our quest, like the War in Afghanistan, never ends.

And Tom and Daisy Buchanan are the ultimate symbol of Wall Street and the Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld/Gingrich Republicans, leaving ruined lives and wreckage in their wake as they continue along their moneyed way.

Of course, being a novel with resonance in 2010, it is ultimately a tragedy and a moral tale of sorts. Would that we would heed it.

BuzzFlash editor's choice for best novel read in high school that should be re-read as an adult, simply a brilliant metaphor for the American character -- and it's not pretty.

Does the "orgiastic future" doom us, or can we change our fate by changing our pursuit of a culture that values wealth over morality, ethics and honesty?

"The Great Gatsby": Perhaps our great American novel about America.
