Exclusive Bill Clinton Interview: I Would Use Constitutional Option To Raise Debt Ceiling And "Force The Courts To Stop Me"

Former President Bill Clinton says that he would invoke the so-called constitutional option to raise the nation’s debt ceiling “without hesitation, and force the courts to stop me” in order to prevent a default, should Congress and the President fail to achieve agreement before the August 2 deadline.
Sharply criticizing Congressional Republicans in an exclusive Monday evening interview with The National Memo, Clinton said, “I think the Constitution is clear and I think this idea that the Congress gets to vote twice on whether to pay for [expenditures] it has appropriated is crazy.”
Lifting the debt ceiling “is necessary to pay for appropriations already made,” he added, “so you can’t say, ‘Well, we won the last election and we didn’t vote for some of that stuff, so we’re going to throw the whole country’s credit into arrears.”
Having faced down the Republican House leadership during two government shutdowns when he was president -- and having brought the country’s budget from the deep deficits left by Republican presidents to a projected surplus -- Clinton is unimpressed by the GOP’s sudden enthusiasm for balanced budgets. But he never considered invoking the Fourteenth Amendment -- which says “the validity of the US public debt shall not be questioned” – because the Republicans led by then-Speaker Newt Gingrich didn’t threaten to use the debt ceiling as a weapon in their budget struggles with him.
According to Clinton, the Gingrich Republicans thought about that tactic before rejecting it -- and Treasury officials who served under Clinton commissioned legal research on the president’s power to raise the debt ceiling without congressional approval. While some legal scholars believe the Fourteenth Amendment requires Congress to fund the debt that results from its appropriations, and therefore empowers the president to raise the debt ceiling, others vehemently disagree.
Like President Obama, Clinton is a former law professor who once taught the Constitution, and he understands that the extent of presidential power remains highly controversial, whether the issue is waging war or increasing the debt.
“Here’s what happened, as I remember – but let me back up a second,” Clinton said. “I have read accounts of that time where people at Treasury have been interviewed, and they say they did look into [the president's authority to raise the debt ceiling without congressional approval].” As for the Republicans, “they did think about doing that" -- withholding approval of a higher limit -- "and I knew they were thinking about it.” But the question ultimately did not arise for Clinton, he says, because his opponents in Congress decided “they didn’t want to get caught” in a position where they appeared to be repudiating the debt incurred by their own party’s two previous presidents.
“The reason that raising the debt limit is so unpopular is that people think you’re voting to keep [increasing] deficit spending, instead of voting to honor obligations that were already incurred,” he said. “I think [the Gingrich Republicans] figured I’d be smart enough to explain to the American people that they were refusing to pay for the expenses they had voted for when Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush were president. And that would make ‘em look bad.”
Obama could offer precisely the same explanation in the present circumstances, where most of the current debt can be traced to the profligate military spending and tax cuts of the last Bush administration. Just as the nation’s debt had tripled or quadrupled between 1981 and 1993, in the dozen years of Republican rule before Clinton’s first inauguration, as he points out, so the second Bush administration plunged the budget from surplus to deep deficit before Obama spent one penny on economic stimulus or anything else.
Although Clinton says that if he were in Obama’s place he would raise the debt ceiling without legislation – “if it came to that” -- he believes the crisis will be resolved before August 2. “It looks to me like they’re going to make an agreement, and that’s smart.”

Senate Democrats — including typically mild-mannered Bill Nelson of Florida — lit into President Barack Obama during an unusually tense air-clearing caucus session on Thursday, senators and staffers told POLITICO.
Nelson told colleagues Obama’s unpopularity has become a serious liability for Democrats in his state and blamed the president for creating a toxic political environment for Democrats nationwide, according to two Democrats familiar with his remarks.

“It was a raucous caucus,” said one Democratic senator, who spoke on condition of anonymity because closed-door sessions are not supposed to be discussed with outsiders.
Nelson declined to respond when asked about the incident Thursday night, saying he was in a hurry to leave the Capitol to catch a flight. His spokesman didn’t return a request for comment.
In interviews after the marathon three-hour meeting, several senators and senior aides told POLITICO that Nelson was just one of several senators to express anger at White House missteps — and air deep concerns about their own political fates if Obama and the Democratic Party leadership can’t turn things around by 2012.
Added one veteran senator: “It was the most frank exchange of views I’ve ever seen.”
Several senators expressed the opinion that Obama needed to show more passion, while party liberals renewed their complaint that Obama should abandon the pretense of bipartisanship in the face of Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s intransigence and what they consider the Kentucky Republican’s blatantly political tactics aimed at making Obama a one-term president.
Others said Democratic leaders need to clearly spell out what they believe are the motivations behind the Republicans' positions: that they are beholden to special interests, who bankroll their campaigns.
If Democrats keep losing the message war, they worry, they will be wiped out in 2012.
“There was a lot of passion in that room,” one senator said. “The reason is because the public is with us on our policies, but they’re not getting the message.”
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), who along with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democratic leaders had met with Obama at the White House earlier in the day, calmly presided over the gripe session, sources say, allowing members to have their say.
Reid, who barely survived a challenge from tea party favorite Sharron Angle, has already taken steps to improve his own messaging operation, tapping New York Sen. Chuck Schumer to run the communications and policy operations of the Democratic Caucus in the next Congress.
With 21 Democrats and two independents facing reelection in 2012, Reid and the White House will be forced to deal with skittish Democrats eager to see a sharpened political operation.
But the complaints are not new. Over the past year, Senate Democrats have expressed dissatisfaction with Obama’s policy priorities, especially his determination to ram through a health care bill against the objections of party conservatives like Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.). The caucus’s left wing, including Vermont independent Bernie Sanders, have argued the opposite point: that Obama’s timidity has led to the defection of liberals and young people turned off by Obama compromises on the public option and economic stimulus.
Thursday’s confrontation reminded some of a February 2010 showdown between Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) and Obama’s senior adviser David Axelrod after the president’s question-and-answer session with senators. An irate Franken, witnesses told POLITICO at the time, dressed down Axelrod and the White House for failing to provide a clearer sense of direction on health reform and other large legislative initiatives.

Robert Byrd Succession Hinges on Ambiguous West Virginia Laws

West Virginia's Democratic Gov. Joe Manchin will have to appoint a successor to replace Sen. Robert Byrd, who died early this morning at the age of 92 -- and with ambiguous state rules making it unclear exactly what the replacement process will entail, his next step is anyone's guess.
Manchin told the Associated Press there is no timetable for him to consider Byrd's replacement -- but the timing of an announcement could impact for how long the appointee will hold the seat.
West Virginia law says that if there is a Senate vacancy more than two and a half years before the incumbent's term ends, there should be a special election after a candidate "has been nominated at the primary election next following such timely filing and has thereafter been elected," the Washington Post reports. There is some ambiguity as to whether that would mean there would be an election this November or an election in November 2012, when Byrd's term would have ended anyway.
There is also some question as to whether there is an official Senate vacancy currently -- or if that hinges on when the governor officially "declares" a vacancy. The governor could choose to wait until after July 3 to declare the vacancy, which would make it less than two and a half years before Byrd's term was up. That would definitively leave the governor's appointment in place until 2012, giving Democrats the advantage of time.
The state's Secretary of State's office tells CBS News that all the complexities of the special election to fill the seat will be discussed at the 4:30 p.m. Eastern news conference by Secretary of State Natalie Tennant.
Democratic sources say that Manchin will likely tap Nick Casey, the state Democratic party chair, to fill Byrd's seat, CBS News chief political consultant Marc Ambinder reports.
According to Democratic sources, Manchin is interested in running for the Senate himself and quietly established a federal political action committee in early June to start raising seed money for a Senate bid, Ambinder reports. However, the governor told the AP he will not appoint himself to fill Byrd's vacancy.
Whether there is an election for Byrd's seat this year or in 2012, Republicans are expected to look to Rep. Shelley Moore Capito to run for the seat. Capito has represented central West Virginia since 2000. She was recruited to challenge Byrd in 2006 but decided against it, the Post reports.
"If there were to be a special election for the seat in November -- and it is not at all clear there will be -- from an electoral standpoint that might set up a very competitive contest, depending on the candidates," said CBS News Election Director Anthony Salvanto. "On one hand, this is a state that re-elected Democratic Senators Byrd and Rockefeller comfortably as well as Democratic Governor Joe Manchin. On the other hand, this is a state that has been very Republican in recent national presidential elections, among others."
Republican John McCain in the 2008 presidential election won easily over President Obama here, 56 percent to 43 percent, (and Mr. Obama lost the Democratic primary, too) and former President Bush won the state twice.

'Iron Man 2': Slick but unspectacular

(CNN) -- The first "Iron Man" boasted a not-so-secret weapon in Robert Downey Jr. reveling in his bad-boy rep as the maverick inventor-industrialist Tony Stark. A combination of Bill Gates, Howard Hughes and Hugh Hefner, Stark had more than his share of character flaws for a superhero. Unlike Bruce Wayne, he couldn't keep his heroics to himself, and unlike Clark Kent, he knew how to party ...

Beginning part two in triumphal mode as the star attraction at the Stark Expo, Tony remains a loose cannon, even if he prefers to think of himself as a human shield or "an enhanced prosthetic" as he tells the Senate committee charged with reminding Iron Man of his patriotic duty.

They want an invincible army, not a one-man defense system. Stark is having none of it. He's too good for government work. "You should thank me," he tells them. "I've privatized world peace."

But the politicians aren't the only ones who want a piece of him. So does rival weapons manufacturer Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell), and more pressingly, Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke), a Russian who has a bone to pick with the Stark family and a shortcut to the kind of technology that could prove a real threat. Add to that the realization that his new artificial ticker is slowly poisoning him, and there's more than enough to bring this shooting star back down to Earth.

The trouble with this sprawling scenario (credited to Justin Theroux of "Tropic Thunder" fame) is that it mutes Downey's cavalier charisma. He's still what makes this show tick, but I'm not sure we want to see him wrestling with his own mortality when it's his instinctive immorality that's his sexiest attribute.

Still, returning director Jon Favreau has seen to it that the supporting actors (including one Jon Favreau as chauffeur Happy Hogan) are ready to step up and take a turn in the spotlight.

There's Samuel L Jackson in an eye-patch, continuing to lay the groundwork for his own Marvel vehicles, "Nick Fury" and "Avengers."

Gwyneth Paltrow's Pepper Potts gets a well-deserved promotion.

Sam Rockwell struts his stuff in a fun satire of an out-of-control CEO.

And Scarlett Johansson peels on the rubber cat suit as undercover agent Natasha Romanoff. (Sadly she's restricted to just the one showpiece action sequence, and even then she's eating Hit-Girl's "Kick-Ass" dust).

And then there's Mickey Rourke. Covered in Russian tattoos, and with a salt and pepper goatee, he strides the wrong way round a Formula One Grand Prix, stripped to the waist, slicing racing cars in two with a crack of his supercharged whips.

Rourke doesn't say much, and half of what he does say is in Russian, but he can sit, silent and motionless, and let Downey or Rockwell talk at him for a full minute, and still command our rapt attention. To the extent that "Iron Man 2" gets its groove back, Rourke's sly bad guy is the reactive core.

Unlike some blockbuster directors, Favreau is most comfortable with the actors, making the scenes play. He's less adept at the hydraulics. The whiz-bang stuff here -- while never less than slick -- doesn't produce anything we haven't seen before.

The movie's biggest problem is that the fight scenes aren't all that, maybe because the outcome is never in question.

If that's the pay-off for what remains a sharper, snappier comic book movie, then so be it, but here's hoping the next one doesn't completely lose its edge.

Obama chooses Elena Kagan for Supreme Court

Washington (CNN) -- President Obama took a key step in cementing his judicial legacy Monday, nominating Solicitor General Elena Kagan to replace retiring Justice John Paul Stevens on the Supreme Court.

If confirmed, the 50-year-old Kagan will become the 112th Supreme Court justice. She would be the third woman on the nine-member bench and the fourth in the history of the court. Her confirmation also would mean that the Supreme Court would have no Protestant justices for the first time in its history. Kagan, who is Jewish, would join six Catholic and two Jewish justices; Stevens is Protestant.

Kagan, a native New Yorker, was widely reported to be the front-runner for the nomination. She was a finalist for the high court vacancy last year when Justice Sonia Sotomayor was selected to replace the retiring David Souter.

Kagan received her law degree from Harvard University, where she later served as dean of the law school. She previously served in the Clinton administration as associate White House counsel.

Kagan is a "trailblazing leader" who is "open to a broad array of viewpoints" and is a proven "consensus builder," Obama said at the White House.

Kagan, in turn, said she was "honored" and "humbled" by what she called "the honor of a lifetime."

"The court is an extraordinary institution," she said. It allows "all Americans ... to get a fair hearing and an equal chance at justice."

Obama decided on Kagan as his nominee on Sunday and called her around 8 p.m., a source close to the process said.

He did not have to look far when considering Kagan. As solicitor general, she is the administration's top lawyer before the Supreme Court and has argued several high-profile cases before the justices since taking the job in spring 2009.

"You have to admit, Elena Kagan is a brilliant woman," Sen. Orrin Hatch, a Republican on the Judiciary Committee, said during a radio interview a year ago when Kagan was being vetted for a high court seat. "She is a brilliant lawyer. If [Obama] picks her, it is a real dilemma for people," especially conservatives.

"And she will undoubtedly say that she will abide by the rule of law."

Her confirmation hearings for the solicitor general job could offer a preview of what she can expect from both Democrats and Republicans. Many saw it as a dress rehearsal of sorts for a high court job.

GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham told Kagan she presented a "positive impression." Democrats were similarly enthused.

With that endorsement, she won confirmation for her current job by a 61-31 vote.

A number of conservative groups were less enamored.

"Among Supreme Court nominees over the last 50 years or more, Kagan may well be the nominee with the least amount of relevant experience," said Ed Whelan, president of the Ethics and Public Policy Center, former law clerk for Justice Antonin Scalia, and former counsel to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Kagan had never argued a case before the Supreme Court or any appeals court before she became solicitor general about a year ago.

"Solicitor General Kagan has been nominated with no judicial experience, a mere two years of private law practice, and only a year as solicitor general of the United States," said David McIntosh, co-founder of the Federalist Society -- a conservative and libertarian legal group -- and former congressman from Indiana. "She is one of the most inexperienced nominees to the U.S. Supreme Court in recent memory."

Kagan's position on gays in the military is virtually certain to generate controversy during her confirmation hearings. She has been strongly criticized by conservatives for her efforts to block military recruiters from Harvard because of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy. The policy, first enacted during the Clinton administration but opposed by Obama, prohibits homosexuals from serving openly in the armed forces.

While serving as dean at Harvard Law, Kagan said she "abhorred" the military's "discriminatory recruitment policy." She called it "a profound wrong -- a moral injustice of the first order."

Kagan supported other schools challenging a federal law requiring them to give recruiters equal access or face the loss of federal funding. The Supreme Court unanimously upheld the law in 2006.

Some liberal organizations, on the other hand, have expressed concern over Kagan's views on executive power. As chief defender of the administration's anti-terrorism strategy, Kagan has articulated a more robust defense of the White House than many civil rights and human rights groups would like.

Observers on both sides of the political aisle have noted that Kagan has a relatively short paper trail compared to other recent Supreme Court nominees.

Kagan grew up in a Jewish household on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. She went to Princeton University and Harvard Law School. She served as a law clerk for federal judge Abner Mikva and then for Justice Thurgood Marshall on the high court.

In her 1986 job application to Marshall, she matter-of-factly told the civil rights pioneer, "I would be honored to serve as your clerk." The nation's first African-American justice affectionately called the diminutive Kagan "Shorty."

Kagan later went into teaching, starting at the University of Chicago, where one of the part-time faculty was Obama. Also teaching at the time was Diane Wood, who later became a federal judge and also was a finalist for the current high court vacancy. Kagan and Wood were among the few women on the full-time faculty at that time.

President Clinton later named Kagan associate White House counsel and then appointed her to the influential Domestic Policy Council, where she earned a reputation for articulate and well-reasoned statements on tricky political issues. She was the administration's point person on passing anti-tobacco legislation, negotiating in 1998 with Republican Sen. John McCain to give the federal government the authority to control cigarettes, as it does pharmaceuticals and medical devices.

Clinton picked her in 1999 for the powerful U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. But no Senate confirmation hearings were held, and the nomination lapsed. The seat was later filled by John Roberts, who quickly used the appointment as a springboard to chief justice.

Named Harvard's dean in 2003, Kagan earned a reputation for soothing longstanding tensions over a perceived liberal tilt to the faculty and curriculum.

She began pushing for the appointment of conservative professors, including Jack Goldsmith, who had been a lawyer in President George W. Bush's Justice Department. Such hires eased ideological unrest on the Harvard campus.

The bruhaha about Tuzla stands out as a moment when Mrs. Greenspan missed an early opportunity to set the record straight.

You may recall that Mrs. Greenspan was on the helicopter & accompanied then-First Lady Clinton on her trip to Tuzla.

Greenspan stayed mum about Mrs. Clinton's tall Tuzla sniper-fire yarn until long after footage was released which demonstrated that Hillary had lied - big time.

Andrea only spoke out when she could no longer stay silent.

She missed a golden opportunity to set the record straight - when it would have meant something.

Now, she just seems to be cozying up to power - I'm sure that she want access to our next president.

b/c W had already nailed down all of the True Believers (TB's).  This time around, McCain's picked up the TB's, but he's still trying to play the moderate at the same time.  I'm not sure anyone could pull off that quinela, but it's becoming increasingly apparent that he's not that guy.

If I ran Obama's campaign, I'd hammer McCain's 95% pro-W voting record relenlessly.  I'd hammer in the morning and in the evening, all over this land.  I'd also run the picture of him hugging W and the picture of them hamming it up w/ the b-day cake while NOLA was drowning.

Make sure that every sentient being in the US knows that McCain has spent the last 8 years as a toady to W.  In doing so, you'll not only undercut McCain's "moderate" credentials, you'll set his temper off, too.

In a Feb. 18, 2000 article, Salon asked the question:  Is John McCain a Crook? The article goes on to detail McCain's long personal relationship with Keating.

IMHO, because he was less cranky in 2000, the press was even less willing than they are now to focus on McCain's less than "honorable" stands and past "issues".

So was "Maverick."  It was a scam!

The classic example was his "principled stand" against torture.  He beat that drum in the press for weeks getting tons of free favorable media coverage, endless recounting of his claim to fame as a POW - then quietly sold out completely!

He voted for the "compromise" that pushed the torture into the CIA and then voted against a ban on CIA torture!  Somehow his main constituency (the press) has never called him to task for that vote!

This is why his Republican colleagues hate his guts.  He makes a huge and public fuss over something they would rather keep a low profile about, and then - reliably and quietly - sells it out.  He has run this same scam repeatedly and the press never gets tired of it.

McCain Feingold?  Election reform?  Don't make me laugh.  That was about distracting attention from the fact that he was Keating's lapdog.  Did it clean up the electoral process?  Are you kidding me?

Yeah but then she went on to argue that McCain must've been "misinformed by his people" regarding the lies his campaign has been putting out, like he's just too busy with the rigors of campaigning to know what's really happening in the world.  He has to rely on what his people tell him.  And if they lie to him about something that Obama did or didn't do or say, and then they make a commercial that regurgitates that lie and then Old Man John says "I approve of this ad" at the end, well, it's not his fault.  He's a man of honor surrounded by dishonorable men acting in his name.  I'm paraphrasing, but that's the gist of Mrs. Greenspan's apologia for poor poor misunderstood McCain.

Andrea was the strongest voice calling McSame out for his lie about not visiting the troops. IIRC, she was the first to call foul, at the very least she had the strongest cred and put her reputation out to do it.

I liked Dana Milbank well enough but his little snide column about Obama was a piece of garbage.

If he had any sense of honor and integrity he simply would have admitted his mistake and moved on.

She and Roger Simon took mcCain to the woodshed for the Brittany ad.

I wish folks would back off Andrea a bit around here. She has been about the only reporter lately to show some backbone.

She was just as careless as the rest of them for so long. Don't find the truth: Just tell both sides and call it "being fair." Now, all of a sudden, she's calling the truth out on people. I'm really shocked by the change.

that she's 'turning' for any journalistic or posterity-type reasons, forget it.  She's just pissed at her fellow chattering media class... the one she and others like her has worked with so hard to spread the falsehoods, narratives, memes and other crap at the bequest of the highest bidders (and government)...

She's upset they've all been using Uncle Alan as the sub-prime, recession, economic slowdown pinata...

She's mad at the larry kudlow/heritage/wall street journal ass clowns who for years pushed for more largess to the barrons at the expense of the taxpayers only to turn on him when they now have to admit their complicity in the financial disaster we've all been hiding in the closet since the 70's and 80's.

she's but one of the thousands that make up our fine chattering class... brought on to make sure 'murkins' think exactly what the bozos in charge want them to think...

She's now pissed at them throwning her husband under the bus after his years of his obedient service in trying to keep their teetering stack of blocks from toppling over.

I'm noticing that lately terms used to describe Obama have taken much more negative turn.  His willingness to compromise is "hiding behind" "backed away"  More and more the terms used infer cowardice.  I don't know if it's a deliberate - but it's deadly.  The swift boat attacks would never have worked if the MSM hadn't "softened" Kerry's image.  They're back!  Each time they use a loaded adjective - they demean him. 

I think we need to find a list of terms to apply to McCain.  Subtle terms that begin a new narrative.

Last night Andrea Mitchell was making excuses for McCain.  She said that the John McCain she knows would not use such tactics.  That he must really believe that Obama snubbed the troops. She thinks that he must not be aware that some of his charges about Obama are false.  That he must be in a campaign bubble. 

HUM...... like he's "brainwashed"?

and doing to Romney what Bush did to him in 2000. McCain just didn't change overnight! He's made a concerted effor to side with Bush and the Neo-Cons for at least 3 years on almost everything. Perhaps the McCain of 2000 was a mirage?

You are so on target about the excuses they all make for McCain as though he were one of the "mentally challenged kids"- what is up with that and we should all do something about it. Urge the the media to be honest about BOTH candidates. McCain changes a position he held for 26 years last month on drilling and the media says boo. Obama merely discusses a possible compromise to include a teeny tiny little bit of drilling in order to pass a HUGE COMPREHENSIVE ENERGY BILL- all the while reiterating that he's not in favor of drillign and doesn't think it will affect oil prices even in the LT and the media reacts as though he "has no principles!" So unfair.

Truly a Kuhnian moment. John McCain is so honorable and straight-shooting that the only explanation for his campaign's headlong dive into sleaze, xenophobia and gonzo bamboozlement is that McCain is so out of it and controlled by his advisors that he doesn't actually know what they're doing in his name.

(Just the kind of guy who should be president, right?)

And you know what? I think it is a very damning statement about McCain that clearly accuses McCain of being willing to throw that honor down the drain at the behest of his evil handlers.

Since I was a little less than proactive about this issue last week on television (for reasons which I think will become readily apparent), I thought I'd offer a little preview of an item on tonight's Countdown.

The headline: Dana Milbank won't be on the news hour any more.

In fact, that's how we're "hanging" this as a brief item in tonight's show:

      Dana Milbank of The Washington Post, who notified us today that after four years appearing with us, he had accepted another television offer.
      This saved your crack Countdown staff an increasingly difficult decision.
      For nearly a week we'd been waiting for him to offer a correction or an explanation for his column from last week in which he apparently reported an Obama quote without a full context turned the meaning of the quote inside-out.   
      Then he called criticisms of his column "whines" even though the dispute was over whether Obama said the self-deprecating: "It has become increasingly clear in my travel, the campaign -- that the crowds, the enthusiasm, 200,000 people in Berlin, is not about me at all. It's about America. I have just become a symbol of the possibility of America returning to our best traditions" -- or only the part about "I have just become a symbol..."
      We had decided not to have Dana on this news-hour again until this was cleared up, and, sadly after some very happy years, he's apparently chosen to make that cloud permanent.
      Good luck, Dana.

Anybody who would come on television to talk about the Dick Cheney shoot-up, wearing an orange safety vest and a hunter's cap automatically gets my benefit of the doubt. But even that had a shelf-life, which was nearing, when he took any further decision-making out of our hands. It was quite a surprise conclusion, obviously, and I'll take it (before anybody tries to take it back).

I'm sure that wasn't his intention, but often one's best work is inadvertent. I'm just as sure his version of the provenance of the original version of the quote the Post's source provided was accurate. What happened thereafter was the problem.

And there's nothing facetious in the good luck wish there. I liked working with Dana, and he once even brought his Mom with him to the New York studio. So we put this not in the Worst Persons In The World segment, but in "Bests," in a spirit of... something.
